Desmond Month 2

Admittedly the worst pictures ever, but that's you sitting beside me a few minutes ago, briefly enjoying your hiccups. Then you cried and now you are swaddled and asleep in my arms. You got your first immunization today. When the nurse (Her name is Dolphin!) weighed you, you were lighter than I expected. I was sure you must weigh 15lbs by now, but you clocked in at a modest 12lbs 12oz and 24in, which might be rather tall, I don't know. You're so much bigger and more alert than this time last month and you looked colossal next to the newborns in the waiting room.
We got back Sunday night from a week at Uncle Ben's lake house, where I thought you behaved very well and KK apparently thought you cried incessantly. Teddy was there. He is a cousin of some sort- the son of my second cousin. I don't know what that makes him to me much less to you- third cousin once removed?. Teddy (how cute is that name?) is 18 months old and I find it simply impossible that you will ever be as big as he is. He walks and talks and laughs and plays and sleeps for 12 hours every night. That's the kicker. It's like he's a teenager. You had better know that trick in 16 months. The way you want to do nothing but stand and move you will probably instead have learned the trick of climbing to impossibly tall heights and usually falling from them.
I can't wait to learn who you're going to be and what you will find funny. You learned this month to coo and make noises. Sometimes you squeal with delight at a near deafening volume... but it's almost always after you've been staring at a random spot on the wall or something unidentifiable and all the way across the room. The day will come when you squeal because of your father's ridiculous faces or my hilarious jokes (yes, my jokes James), but for now whatever is so delightful remains trapped inside your tiny head. Still, every day with you is like a little miracle and they just keep getting better.
We're on our way to get some chicken wings for dinner and I'm saying a little prayer that it's not spicy food that kept you up for hours screaming last night because I am in no way hoping to repeat that experience. But, I have hunger and cravings during breastfeeding that were mysteriously dormant during pregnancy and the wings are calling...
Love,
Mom
